How to Make Calls While Traveling Abroad

You might need to call a hotel, airline, restaurant, rental-car company, bank, business or someone who doesn't use the same messaging app.

That's where Travel Calling can help.

How does Travel Calling work?

Travel Calling uses your internet connection to make calls.

That connection can come from:

• Wi-Fi
• mobile data
• a travel eSIM

Instead of relying entirely on expensive international roaming, you can use an internet-based calling service while traveling.

What is a virtual phone number?

A virtual number is a phone number that isn't tied to a traditional physical SIM card.

Calls to that number can be routed through an internet calling service and answered using an app.

Virtual-number availability varies by country and number type, so a local number may not be available for every destination.

Do I need Travel Calling if I have an eSIM?

Not necessarily.

If you mainly use WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage, Messenger, email or other internet apps, a travel eSIM may be all you need.

But if you need to call regular phone numbers or want a virtual number, Travel Calling can complement your eSIM.

Why do eSIM and Travel Calling work well together?

Think of them as two different parts of staying connected:

Travel eSIM = internet

Your eSIM supplies the mobile internet connection.

Travel Calling = calls + virtual number where available

Travel Calling can then use that connection to make calls while you're away from Wi-Fi.

What should I choose?

Just need internet and apps?

Choose a Travel eSIM.

Need regular phone calls or a virtual number?

Choose Travel Calling.

Need both?

Choose Data + Calling.
