Mexico FMM: Do You Still Need a Tourist Card?

The Mexico FMM — often searched as a tourist card — is still part of Mexico's immigration picture, but the process is not the same for every traveler. Air and land entry can differ. Check official Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) information for your trip.

What is the Mexico FMM?

FMM means Forma Migratoria Múltiple. It has traditionally been used as an immigration document for foreign visitors entering Mexico.

Travelers often search for “Mexico tourist card.” That phrase commonly refers to the FMM. It is not a separate commercial product and it is not a visa.

Do I still need an FMM in 2026?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer that covers every airport, land crossing and traveler circumstance.

Mexico's implementation has changed. The process can differ depending on method of entry, port of entry and traveler circumstances. Use current INM information rather than an old blog post from a previous trip.

Flying into Mexico

INM currently states that it omits physical issuance of the Multiple Migratory Form for foreigners who enter Mexico by air.

If you enter by air, INM says you no longer have to fill out the Electronic Multiple Migratory Form (FMMe) or the physical Multiple Migratory Form. INM instead describes generation and download of the Digital Multiple Migratory Form (FMMd) after you have entered the country.

That means you should not assume that flying into Cancun, Mexico City, Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta requires completing an online FMM before boarding. Those city names show up in searches, but they are not separate FMM products. Confirm the current air-entry process with INM and your airline.

INM says travelers can download the FMMd during the stay granted by the immigration officer, after entry — not in advance.

Entering Mexico by land

Land entry is not the same as the current air-entry process. INM has maintained an electronic FMM process relevant to qualifying foreign travelers entering by land.

Who can use it, when to complete it, and whether a visitor fee applies can depend on the port of entry and the traveler's circumstances. Do not copy an air-entry article onto a US–Mexico land crossing.

Follow current INM instructions for land entry rather than a third-party “tourist card” seller.

Is the FMM a visa?

No. The FMM is an immigration document used in Mexico's visitor-entry process. A visa is a separate authorization that some nationalities need before travel. Do not treat the tourist-card phrase as a visa product.

How long can I stay in Mexico?

Do not assume every visitor automatically receives 180 days.

Authorized stay is determined through the immigration process and traveler circumstances. The period granted at entry is the one that matters, not a generic number repeated online.

Do I need to keep proof of entry?

INM currently describes an official services portal where eligible travelers can consult and download the Digital Multiple Migratory Form after air entry.

Keep whatever entry record INM issues for your trip — digital download, stamp, or other documentation shown in the official process. Go-Worldify does not store passport details or generate FMMd files.

Where is official Mexican immigration information?

Use Instituto Nacional de Migración resources. There is no single universal FMM URL that covers every air and land scenario.
