Tourist Card vs E-Ticket

You still need the free E-Ticket. It is the electronic entry/exit form from Dirección General de Migración — not the Tourist Card.

Dominican Republic E-Ticket guide →

The Dominican Republic Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turista) is a US$10 tourism tax/card. For qualifying airline tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic, that amount is generally included in airfare. Who needs it depends on nationality, immigration status, exemptions, and whether you arrive by air, land, or sea. It is not the same thing as the free E-Ticket.

Dominican Republic Tourist Card — Quick Answer

  • Cost

US$10. The tax is US$10 even when you do not pay it as a separate purchase.

  • For air arrivals

The Tourist Card charge is generally included in airline tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic. Most air travelers should not expect to buy a separate card at the airport.

  • For land and sea arrivals

A Tourist Card may need to be purchased at the applicable DGII point of sale. Do not assume the airfare rule applies.

  • Validity

Up to 30 days / one entry, subject to applicable rules. It is not an unrestricted 30-day visa.

  • E-Ticket

Separate and free. The E-Ticket is the electronic immigration/customs form from Dirección General de Migración.

  • Visa

A separate requirement that depends on nationality and purpose. Not every traveler needs both a Tourist Card and a visa.

  • Official authority

Dirección General de Impuestos Internos (DGII).

Do I Need to Buy a Tourist Card?

It depends on how you enter. DGII treats air arrivals differently from land and sea arrivals. Do not buy a second Tourist Card just because a search result offered one.

Air

DGII currently states that the US$10 Tourist Card is included in airline tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic. Therefore, most travelers arriving by air on a qualifying ticket should not expect to buy a separate Tourist Card at the airport.

DGII also describes air tickets with a point of sale in the Dominican Republic, and transit passengers whose final destination is not the Dominican Republic, as cases where the card is not included in the ticket. Review your fare breakdown rather than assuming you must purchase another card.

Land

If you enter by land, DGII says the Tourist Card is obtained at DGII points of sale at the land-border localities. The airfare-inclusion rule does not replace that process.

Sea

If you enter by sea, DGII says the Tourist Card is obtained at DGII points of sale at the maritime/port localities. Cruise, yacht, and other maritime arrivals are not the same as a commercial airline arrival. Confirm the applicable purchase point at the port rather than following air-ticket advice.

Tourist Card vs E-Ticket vs visa

These are three different things. Competing pages often mix them. The Tourist Card is a DGII tourism tax/card. The E-Ticket is a Dirección General de Migración entry/exit form. A visa is a separate immigration authorization.

  • Tourist Card

US$10 tourism tax/card (Tarjeta de Turista). Generally included in qualifying airfare issued outside the Dominican Republic. Authority: DGII.

  • E-Ticket

Free electronic immigration/customs form with a QR code. Required for applicable commercial-flight entry and exit. Authority: Dirección General de Migración.

  • Visa

Separate immigration authorization. Depends on nationality and purpose. Issued through Dominican authorities or consulates where required.

Tourist Card vs Visa

The Tourist Card is a tourism entry tax/card for eligible travelers. DGII describes it as authorizing a tourist stay of up to 30 days under the applicable rules. It is not a consular visa.

A visa is a separate immigration authorization. Whether you need one depends on nationality and purpose. Some travelers enter as tourists with Tourist Card treatment and no consular visa. Other nationalities cannot use the Tourist Card and need a visa issued through Dominican authorities or consulates.

Do not assume every traveler needs both. Check nationality-specific Dominican Republic entry requirements, including the US traveler page if you hold a US passport, and confirm visa rules with official Dominican sources.

Who Needs a Tourist Card?

Whether the Tourist Card applies depends on your nationality, immigration status, and applicable exemptions. DGII describes it for tourists entering without a consular visa where the Tourist Card applies.

Official exemptions and refund-eligible groups described by DGII include Dominican nationals, Dominican residents with a valid residence card, foreigners with a valid Dominican visa and diplomats accredited in the country, and citizens of countries exempt by bilateral agreements ratified by Congress. That is not a complete nationality list.

This page does not publish an unverified country-by-country list. Use the Dominican Republic entry-requirements pages and official DGII/Migration sources for your passport.

Do US Citizens Need a Dominican Republic Tourist Card?

US passport holders visiting as ordinary short-stay tourists are generally in the visa-free tourist category described by official Dominican tourism sources. That does not mean you skip every entry step.

  • US passport: still required. Validity rules can differ between Dominican tourism guidance and airline practice.
  • Tourist Card: the US$10 tax is generally included in a qualifying airline ticket issued outside the Dominican Republic. US travelers arriving by air should not assume they must buy a separate US$10 Tourist Card before flying.
  • E-Ticket: separate, free, and still required for applicable commercial-flight entry and exit.
  • Visa: ordinary short US tourism generally does not require a consular tourist visa. Other purposes are different.
  • Airfare: review the ticket/fare breakdown for Tourist Card inclusion rather than paying a third-party seller.

Use the US traveler Dominican Republic page for passport, visa, E-Ticket, and return-to-the-US detail. This page stays focused on the Tourist Card.

Punta Cana Tourist Card

Punta Cana is in the Dominican Republic. There is no separate Punta Cana Tourist Card. The same national Tourist Card rules apply at Punta Cana International Airport and other Dominican airports.

Do I buy a Tourist Card at Punta Cana Airport? For air arrivals on a qualifying ticket issued outside the Dominican Republic, DGII’s airfare-inclusion rule applies. You should not expect a separate national Tourist Card product just because you land in Punta Cana.

You still complete the free national E-Ticket for applicable commercial flights. That is also not a Punta Cana-only form.

Can I Buy the Dominican Republic Tourist Card Online?

Do not treat “buy online” as a yes-or-no for every traveler. The answer depends on travel mode.

For air travelers whose qualifying ticket already includes the Tourist Card, there is generally no need to purchase another Tourist Card separately — online or at the airport.

For land and sea travelers, DGII says the card is obtained at DGII points of sale at those localities. This guide does not invent an official online purchase process, and it does not send travelers to third-party sites selling “Dominican Republic Tourist Cards.”

Beware of Websites Charging for the E-Ticket

The Dominican Republic E-Ticket is free. The Tourist Card is a separate US$10 tourism tax/card that is generally included in qualifying airfare for air arrivals.

Do not confuse an E-Ticket “service fee,” the Tourist Card tax, and a third-party convenience charge. Be careful with websites that charge a service fee to complete the free E-Ticket. The official Dominican Migration E-Ticket service is free.

Use the official E-Ticket portal from Dirección General de Migración. Use DGII for Tourist Card tax information. Go-Worldify does not charge a fee to complete either process.

How Much Is the Dominican Republic Tourist Card?

US$10. DGII describes the Tourist Card as a US$10 tax.

The tax is not US$0. The important distinction is whether you pay that US$10 separately. For qualifying air tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic, the amount is included in the airfare. For applicable land and sea arrivals, DGII provides purchase points at those localities. Confirm payment currency at the DGII point of sale if you buy there.

Is the Tourist Card Included in My Plane Ticket?

According to DGII, since 25 April 2018 the Tourist Card has been included in airline tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic.

Travelers should therefore review their ticket or fare breakdown rather than assuming they need to buy another card. This page does not overstate exceptions. If your ticket was issued in the Dominican Republic, or you are in transit to another country, DGII describes different ticket-inclusion treatment — confirm with your airline and DGII.

What If I Enter the Dominican Republic by Land or Sea?

Land-border and maritime/port entries are not commercial airline arrivals. DGII says the Tourist Card may be purchased at DGII points of sale at those localities for US$10.

Cruise passengers, yacht passengers, ferry passengers, and commercial airline passengers are not interchangeable for this purpose. Follow the process for your actual arrival type. The E-Ticket is described for applicable commercial-flight passengers; private flights, ferries, and cruise ships may use physical forms instead of the E-Ticket.

How Long Is the Tourist Card Valid?

DGII describes the Tourist Card as authorizing a tourist stay of up to 30 days and as usable for one entry. The card is not an unrestricted 30-day visa. Visa and entry eligibility remain a separate issue.

Extensions and overstay treatment are handled by Dirección General de Migración, not by buying another Tourist Card from a third party.

What If I Stay More Than 30 Days?

Additional stay or overstay fees may apply. The relevant authority is Dirección General de Migración. This page does not publish a fee table because current official amounts should be confirmed with Migration directly.

Can the Tourist Card Fee Be Refunded?

Only if you are in an official DGII-eligible group. Refunds are not universal.

DGII describes refund eligibility for groups such as Dominican nationals, Dominican residents with a valid residence card, foreigners with a valid Dominican visa and diplomats accredited in-country, and citizens of countries exempt by bilateral agreements ratified by Congress.

DGII says eligible travelers may request the refund through DGII and/or the E-Ticket (the form can ask whether you want to apply for the US$10 refund). The window DGII describes runs from ticket purchase until 30 days after entry. Use the official DGII refund page rather than a reseller.

You Still Need the Free E-Ticket

The E-Ticket is separate from the Tourist Card. It is the electronic entry/exit form. It is free. It applies to passengers entering or departing under the current commercial-flight rules. The official authority is Dirección General de Migración.

Complete it on the official Migration portal and keep the QR code available. Go-Worldify does not charge a service fee for the E-Ticket.

Dominican Republic Entry Checklist

For a typical air traveler. Nationalities do not all have identical requirements.

  1. Valid passport
  2. Visa if required by nationality or purpose
  3. Tourist Card treatment checked or included in airfare where applicable
  4. Free E-Ticket completed for applicable commercial flights
  5. E-Ticket QR code available
  6. Other current entry requirements checked on official sources

Leaving the Dominican Republic

The Tourist Card is not the exit form. For applicable commercial flights, the E-Ticket includes an exit component. Complete departure information on the official Migration E-Ticket, not on a paid copy of the Tourist Card.

Overstay issues are a Migration matter. US return screening, customs, and agriculture rules are separate — use the US traveler Dominican Republic page rather than duplicating that checklist here.

Official sources

Primary authority for the Tourist Card is DGII. Primary authority for the E-Ticket is Dirección General de Migración. Confirm current rules on those official pages before travel.
