US passport holders can generally visit Colombia for short stays without obtaining a traditional tourist visa in advance, subject to current immigration rules. Check-Mig is optional and recommended — not a mandatory entry permit.

Where sources disagree
CDC lists yellow fever vaccine as required for all arriving travelers ≥1 year. The U.S. State Department describes a more limited rule and points to Colombia’s Health Ministry. Confirm with official Colombian sources.
Migración Colombia describes Check-Mig as optional and suggested. The U.S. Department of State still tells travelers to complete it. Destination-country immigration is the source of truth for whether it is legally required.
Visa Requirements for US Citizens

US passport holders generally do not need a tourist visa for stays of 90 days or less for tourism or business.
Visa required
NO
Visa-free stay
Typically 90 days or less for tourism or business (U.S. State Department).
Maximum permitted stay
State Department notes a possible 90-day extension and a 180-day calendar-year ceiling. Confirm at entry.
Extension possible
State Department points to a possible 90-day extension from Migración Colombia before the first 90 days expire.

None. Check-Mig is optional recommended pre-registration, not a visa or ETA.
Purpose restrictions
Tourism or business of 90 days or less. Work or residence is different.
Official authority
Migración Colombia (visa rule cited via U.S. State Department supporting guidance)
Last verified: Sep 8, 2026
The U.S. Department of State currently states that US citizens do not need a Colombian visa for tourism or business if staying 90 days or less, and describes the same idea for cumulative stays of 180 days or less per calendar year.
Before a 90-day admission expires, State Department guidance points to a possible 90-day extension from Migración Colombia. Overstay can bring fines and exit problems.
A visa, if you hold one valid over three months, has separate registration rules. This page is for ordinary short visits, not residence.
Passport and Documents

Passport
You must show a valid, non-expired US passport to enter and leave if you are not a Colombian citizen.
State Department supporting guidance: passport valid at entry and for the stay; one blank page for a stamp unless enrolled in Migración Automática; six months’ validity recommended, not stated here as a Migración Colombia hard rule.
US-Colombian dual nationals should follow official dual-nationality instructions (both passports). That is a citizenship issue, not a US-tourist default.
Onward travel
The U.S. Department of State warns that Colombia may deny entry without a return ticket. Carry proof of leaving within your authorized stay.

When to complete
If you complete it: 72 hours to 1 hour before travel.
Migración Colombia’s entry and exit instructions currently say Check-Mig pre-registration is suggested from 72 hours before travel until one hour before travel, and that it is not mandatory — optional and suggested to speed processing.
That is the destination-country rule Go-Worldify uses. Check-Mig stays optional recommended unless official Migración Colombia guidance changes.
The U.S. Department of State still tells travelers to complete Check-Mig. Airlines may also ask for confirmation at check-in. Completing the free official form can reduce friction even when it is optional.
Check-Mig does not replace a passport, visa, or stay permission. It does not guarantee admission.
Official submission is free on apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co (a .gov.co site). Ignore lookalikes that charge.
Migración Colombia describes the pre-registration for travelers who intend to enter or leave Colombia. Current guidance is not framed as a land-border-only or air-only mandate because the form itself is optional.

Customs
Check-Mig is immigration pre-registration, not a substitute for Colombian customs declarations when those apply.
Declare currency or goods under official DIAN / customs rules. Confirm cash thresholds on official pages.

Entry Health Requirements
REQUIRED
Yellow fever vaccination (entry)
Sources disagree. CDC (updated 9 July 2025) lists a country entry requirement for all arriving travelers ≥1 year old. The U.S. State Department describes a yellow-fever shot as required for travelers coming from certain countries or visiting certain national parks and points to Colombia’s Health Ministry. Confirm with official Colombian health/immigration sources and your airline before you fly.

Expired or lost passport
If a passport is expired or lost, contact a US embassy or consulate. Confirm current CBP document practice before you fly.
Leaving Colombia vs entering the US
Check-Mig is a Colombian exit/entry process, not a US return form. Current wording: optional recommended.
What to declare
Declare purchases, gifts, and food. If unsure, declare it.
Food and agriculture
Food and farm-product rules can differ. Declare items; inspectors decide.
Purchases and duty
Typical CBP exemption: US$800, generally once every 30 days. Confirm live amounts.
Usually 48 hours outside the US for that exemption.
Shorter trips: CBP currently lists US$200 if away under 48 hours. Confirm live amounts.
Alcohol amounts in the CBP exemption can differ for some listed trips. Confirm live CBP figures.
Alcohol in that exemption: currently 2 L. Confirm live CBP rules.
Currency
Amounts over $10,000 (or equivalent) in cash or monetary instruments are typically reported to CBP. Reporting is not the same as a ban. Confirm current CBP practice.
Medications
Medicine you bring back can be treated differently than in the destination. Keep original packaging and confirm with CBP/FDA if unsure.
After you return
Some areas have extra CDC health notes after return. That is health guidance, not a US entry form.
Traveling with a dog or other pet
Pet return rules can depend on the animal and countries visited, not only the last airport. Check current CDC guidance.
CDC currently lists Colombia as high-risk for dog rabies for US dog import. Confirm the live CDC list; rules can depend on other countries visited in the past 6 months.
For tourism or business of 90 days or less, the U.S. State Department currently says no Colombian visa is required. Longer stays, work, or residence are different.

Migración Colombia currently says no — it is optional and suggested. State Department and some airlines still tell you to complete it. Use the free official site if you do.
Can US citizens enter Colombia without Check-Mig?
Under current Migración Colombia wording, Check-Mig is not mandatory. You must still meet passport, visa/stay, and other immigration conditions. An airline can still refuse boarding if it requires the confirmation as a carrier policy.
How long can US passport holders stay?
State Department guidance is 90 days or less without a visa, with a possible extension. The grant at admission is what you must obey.
